Copywriting 101: Stop, Drop and Write Right

Writing great copy isn’t rocket science, but it does take focus, empathy, and a knack for getting straight to the point.

Whether you’re crafting a headline or building out a brand story, these ten quick tips will keep your copy sharp, snappy, and on target.

1. Take a Thorough Brief

Good copy starts with good information. Skip the fluff and dig into the facts—because compelling messaging hinges on clarity, not empty rhetoric.

2. Picture Your Audience

Who are you talking to? What do they know, what do they need to know, and what will light a fire under them? Keep these answers front and center.

3. Choose Your Main Message

Every piece of copy needs a “sell.” Figure out what it is, isolate it, and make it the star of the show.

4. Start Strong

Your headline and first paragraph are prime real estate—don’t waste them. Hook your reader with your main message right away.

5. Match the Tone

Adjust your tone to align with your audience’s mindset. Whether they’re professionals, parents, or party planners, write in a way that meets them where they are.

6. Keep It Short

Short sentences are easier to read and understand. Serve up your facts in bite-sized chunks, not a marathon of words.

7. Be Enthusiastic, But Chill

Persuade and excite your reader, but don’t go full infomercial. A well-reasoned soft-sell beats hard-sell theatrics every time.

8. Write in the Second Person

It’s all about you. Speak directly to your reader to make your message personal and engaging.

9. Use Contractions

You’ll sound more approachable if you write you’ll instead of you will. Bonus: it saves space, too.

10. Prefer the Active Voice

Active voice is clear, direct, and energizing. Say “You’ll love this” instead of “This will be loved by you.”

Final Thoughts: Copy That Connects

Great copy doesn’t just fill space. It sparks action.

Take the time to master these basics, and your words will always hit the mark.
